Matteo Guendouzi’s situation at Lazio has shifted from a routine winter rumour into one of the more intriguing battles of the Premier League window, with Newcastle United moving ahead of Sunderland in the push for his signature.

The French midfielder has been a steady presence for Maurizio Sarri this season, yet the club’s financial requirements have forced them to consider offers that would previously have been dismissed out of hand.

His contract runs until 2027, but Lazio’s need to generate capital gains has placed him firmly on the market at a time when several English sides are searching for midfield depth and energy.

Sunderland Express Interest for Guendouzi

Sunderland were the first to act with a €20 million offer that signaled serious intent. The presence of Regis Le Bris gave them confidence, as his past working relationship with Guendouzi at Lorient had created a link that could have smoothed negotiations.

Their plan was straightforward: move quickly, demonstrate ambition, and bolster the squad after climbing back into the Premier League. It was a bold strategy, and for a short period, it positioned them as frontrunners, especially as they were prepared to push their bid closer to €25 million if needed.

With Lazio poised to cash in on Guendouzi amid this EPL tug-of-war, futures markets price their Serie A top-four odds at 4/1 to 6/1, reflecting the sense that reinvestment could genuinely improve the squad. Coppa Italia outright prices sit in double digits as they remain viewed as outsiders. These changing odds influence fans who bet on these games on several platforms chosen according to Cardplayer Insights that provide comparisons to identify the best possible experience. The financial backdrop around the club adds extra weight to how these probabilities are interpreted.

Newcastle Enters the Race for Lazio Midfielder

Newcastle’s emergence in the chase changed everything. Eddie Howe has admired Guendouzi for some time and sees him as a natural fit for the relentless pressing game he prefers.

The prospect of European football, combined with a more stable sporting project, has given Newcastle a clear edge. For Guendouzi, the chance to play on that stage carries real significance, particularly with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon. Staying visible in continental competition is a priority, and his representatives have quietly indicated that this will have a strong influence on his decision.

Guendouzi’s form this year lines up perfectly with that vision. He’s become a regular starter in Serie A, knocked in two goals, and displayed a tactical savvy that was often lacking early in his career. After a rough finish at Arsenal and a patchy stint in Marseille, his time in Rome has gotten his game back on track.

Aston Villa & Napoli Keeping An Eye on Situation

While Aston Villa watches the unfolding scene, Napoli does the same; however, both clubs lag behind the headway Newcastle and Sunderland have secured.

What Does the Future Hold?

As rumors swirl about a potential sale, Lazio quietly commenced the search for suitable stand-ins. If Lazio are scouting for composure, Giovanni Fabbian stays near the top of the list; while Lewis Ferguson’s tougher style could slot neatly into Sarri’s setup to replace Guendouzi’s ‘grinta’.

  1. Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton plus Miley the youngster, it would be hard for Guendouzi to fit in as constant starter.

  2. Lazio want another midfielder, Lazio also looking to sell their most regular midfielder. What is the point of this?

A portion of the sell goes to Arsenal so this makes no sense at all.

    1. They need money to lift the ban. Lotito is scrambling. For weeks we’ve heard “the ban is lifting in the coming days”…

The only way the ban lifts is if January is profitable. Lotito is looking to sell Guendouzi for 20-25m, and then buy a replacement for 10m.

  3. If lottito had just sold the club, we wont need to sell one of our prospective midfielders just to lift a ban..
