With Lazio set to play a Quarter-Final game against Bologna on February 4, we can examine how they may perform in the game and whether they can advance to the Final. This season has been a mixed bag of results overall, with Maurizio Sarri’s side currently placed outside the European spots.

They did, however, manage to win their Round of 16 Coppa Italia tie against Milan 1-0, which saw them progress to the next round. The Biancocelesti have a rich history in this competition, winning the cup a total of 7 times, most recently in 2018-19.

In this article, we’ll look at the chances of whether Lazio can defy the odds and lift the trophy again this year.

Cup Competition & Upsets

Lazio are not favourites to win the competition, with the online football betting markets currently placing teams such as Inter Milan, Juventus, and Napoli as more likely to succeed.

However, cup competitions are full of upsets. That can be seen in competitions all over the world, even in the FA Cup 3rd round, where Wrexham FC defied their Championship odds to beat Premier League team Nottingham Forest.

There have also been many upsets in the Coppa Italia this season, not least Lazio’s defeat of Milan, which was a surprise victory in its own right. There are also clubs such as Genoa and Serie B team Venezia who competed in the Round of 16, which also showed that lower-profile teams can perform well in the Cup this season.

Last season, Bologna pulled off an incredible upset, beating Milan 1-0 in the Final. Those underdog victors now represent a difficult test for Lazio in the upcoming Quarter-Final.

Lazio vs Bologna – Head to Head

Both Lazio and Bologna are placed just above the middle of the Serie A table, which means there isn’t too much to separate the sides in terms of recent form.

Bologna beat Parma 2-1 in the Round of 16, quite convincingly, with a 71.5% possession and a total of 16 shots to Parma’s six. The Biancocelesti, on the other hand, beat Milan in a much more closely contested game, where the home team held 42.1% possession compared to Milan’s 57.9%, as well as 11 shots to 9, respectively.

The last time they played each other was a 1-1 draw in the Serie A on the 7th December 2025. It was a very close game with a Lazio red card in the 78th minute – a defining moment of action outside of the two goals.

Lazio’s History in the Coppa Italia

Lazio first won the Coppa Italia in 1958 against Fiorentina, and have won the cup six more times since then.

Notable finals include the 2008 Coppa Italia, where they beat Sampdoria 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at full time and in 2013, where they won 1-0 against Roma.

They have the chance to make history again if they can beat Bologna in February and progress through to the next rounds.

  1. Winning Coppa Italia would feel like winning a 3rd Scudetto, or a Champions League trophy.
    Which is a wishful thinking.
