Lazio have reportedly launched a new onslaught for Atalanta attacker Daniel Maldini, who has been on the shortlist since the start of the month.

The Background

Even with the club embroiled in the Alessio Romagnoli soap opera, sporting director Angelo Fabiani continues to work on other fronts, and one of the positions that the club would like to fill before the end of January is the left-winger role. While Mattia Zaccagni remains the undisputed starter, the club is expected to bring in a backup, even if Maurizio Sarri insisted it’s not a priority for January.

Lazio Turned from Lorenzo Insigne to Daniel Maldini

The Lazio head coach was initially hoping to reunite with his former Napoli pupil, Lorenzo Insigne, who reportedly reached an agreement in principle with the club. However, the deal was put on ice, with Fabiani instead pushing for the younger Maldini.

Lazio Determined to Sign Maldini in January

According to Sky Sport Italia, Lazio have now accelerated their attempts to recruit the 24-year-old from Atalanta. They are hoping to close the deal as swiftly as possible to avoid competition from other suitors.

Maldini’s Career Path Thus Far

Like his legendary father, Paolo Maldini, the third-generation star started his career at AC Milan. He had loan spells at Spezia and Empoli, before joining Monza in January 2024. The attacking midfielder delivered the goods at the U-Power Stadium, and even became a regular starter for the Italian national team under Luciano Spalletti.

In January 2025, he was poached by Atalanta, who paid €13 million for his services, but between recurring managerial changes and a strong competition for places, he was lost in the shuffle.

Maldini’s Stats & Playing Role

This season, Maldini has only made 11 appearances, mostly coming off the bench, and contributed with a single assist. The Italian international primarily features as an attacking midfielder, but he’s comfortable playing as a left winger as well.

    1. 100%. I say if you can get insigne for cheap get him. He can come off the bench. You can use him in 3 4 1 2 formation behind the 2 strikers. I watched him play a few times in Toronto. He still puts the passes in. The only thing he can’t cut in anymore. So let him roam in the middle

    2. You really rate him? Personally I believe he is rubbish. The only place he played consistently is Monza. He is not even good enough for Atalanta how can we want him? Its a big no from me

  1. There’s a reason he’s bounced around a bunch of teams, he’s just not that good.

Perfect for Lotito’s new Serie B type project.
