After dethroning Bologna in the quarter-finals, Lazio are one step closer towards clinching their first Coppa Italia trophy in seven years.
With seven triumphs on their record books, the Italian cup is considered the Biancocelesti’s favorite competition. This season, this tournament has additional significance for Maurizio Sarri’s men, as it represents their only remaining path towards European football next term. After all, the team currently sits 10th in the table, 11 points adrift from the Top 6.
Lazio are now preparing to host Atalanta in the first leg of the semi-finals on Wednesday. This contest will be preceded by a Tuesday meeting between the other semi-finalists, Como and Inter Milan.
Since all other remaining participants are ahead of the Aquile in the league table, many reliable betting platforms, like the ones you can find on Bally Bet, consider them as the ultimate underdogs, and perhaps for good reason, as their poor February results and hollow displays are unlikely to inspire too many punters.
Nevertheless, Lazio have managed to defy the odds in the past, as most of their Coppa Italia triumphs, if not all, were achieved from an underdog status. Moreover, Sarri’s men have decided to lay all their eggs in the cup basket, so we can expect them to deliver a comprehensively improved display on the ones we’ve witnessed in recent weeks.
But prior to Wednesday’s big showdown, it’s time to recall Lazio’s three previous participations in the Coppa Italia semi-final, and how each unfolded.
Juventus vs Lazio (2023/24)
Lazio’s most recent appearance in the semis saw them clash heads with Massimiliano Allegri’s Juventus in 2024. The Bianconeri won the first leg in Turin by two unanswered goals thanks to second-half goals from Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa.
In the returning fixture, Luis Alberto provided two assists for Taty Castellanos, who equalized the aggregate score, much to the delight of the Stadio Olimpico crowds. However, the evening ended in heartbreak for the Biancocelesti, as Arkadiusz Milik struck late to put the Old Lady in the final.
Lazio vs AC Milan (2018/19)
Simone Inzaghi’s Lazio stint was characterized by remarkable cup campaigns, but the pennical of his Coppa Italia success ensued in the 2018/19 campaign when they went on clinch their 7th triumph. But before beating Atalanta in the final, they had eliminated Gennaro Gattuso’s Milan in the semis.
The first leg in Rome ended in a goalless draw, so Joaquin Correa’s solitary goal at San Siro was enough to punch the Aquile’s ticket to the grand finale.
AC Milan vs Lazio (2017/18)
Prior to their 2019 meeting, Lazio and Milan had already crossed paths at the same stage of the competition a year earlier, and it was an even less eventful affair, as neither side was able to score after 90 minutes at San Siro and 120 minutes at the Olimpico.
After an extended penalty shootout, Alessio Romagnoli broke the hearts of his future supporters by scoring the decisive spot-kick for the Rossoneri, in what was a bittersweet moment for the lifelong Laziale.
