Italian journalist Alberto Abbate believes the writing is on the wall for Lazio and Maurizio Sarri, who is unlikely to dwell for too long.

The Background

The 67-year-old has been a divisive figure among Biancocelesti supporters. While many have depicted him as a victim of the negative circumstances caused by Claudio Lotito’s administration, which failed to provide him with a competitive squad, others believe his tactics and lack of motivation are part of the issue.

Maurizio Sarri Made New Controversial Comments

Following Lazio’s defeat to Torino on Sunday, Sarri raised eyebrows with his post-match statements, revealing that his players have been demoralized by the club’s ‘cloudy’ future. This certainly isn’t the first time the 67-year-old has aimed a dig at the hierarchy. He and Lotito were involved in a back-and-forth public spat throughout January.

Should Lazio Sack Sarri?

In his interview with Radio Laziale (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Il Messaggero journalist Alberto Abbate argued that the Tuscan tactician would have lost his job after making such comments at any other top club.

I don’t know whether Sarri will make it to the end of the season. It’s embarrassing that the club won’t sack a coach they haven’t been able to stand for months.

I defend Sarri for everything that’s happening, but a normal club, after the last two matches, couldn’t possibly avoid dismissing him. A club that doesn’t think only about money. A serious club would have fired Sarri after what he said yesterday about the cloudy future.

Sarri Destined to Leave Lazio in June

Abbate, who writes for Il Messaggero, knows the atmosphere at Lazio inside out. He believes that Lotito has yet to pull the trigger on Sarri’s second tenure for purely financial reasons, but he insists that the coach will leave Formello at the end of the season, one way or the other.

The club isn’t sacking him just to avoid paying him all the money he’s owed. They’re afraid Sarri won’t receive other offers, yet in the meantime they want to carry on with him until the end of the season.

Sarri as a scapegoat? Of course the club will try. The ending already seems written. Right now there’s no way Sarri stays.

At Formello they’re hoping he finds a team at the end of the season; otherwise they’ll have to sack him, because Sarri won’t resign without another contract in hand.

  1. Given the financial hit from missing Europe, the ageing squad profile, and the lack of marketable assets, Lazio are entering a contraction phase rather than a rebuild. The squad needs investment, but the budget will be minimal. On top of that, Lotito has chosen to channel most of his energy into the stadium project, a long‑term positive, but it comes at the cost of reinforcing the core of the team right now. It’s a classic case of trying to run before learning to walk: prioritising infrastructure while the squad itself weakens. Realistically, next season’s range is 8th–12th unless something dramatic changes. (Which it will not)

  2. I never liked his style. Even when he had better team he played shitty football. There were 2-3 good games per season with him on the bench. I remember 4:0 win over Milan when everything clicked, we were fast and hungry. But mostly it is slow, without any spark or idea. And corners are always free ball for our opponents. I firmly believe Sarri never practiced cornes with team. Aerial duels as well. We are losing 75% of them. Many times our player won’t even jump and leaves the ball. Anyone but Sarri. Anyone.

    1. I would take even Pioli rather than him! But currently free coaches are Maresca, Gilardino, De Zerbi, Motta, Nesta…

      1. I guess De Zerbi it is. Motta won’t take the job but maybe De Zerbi wouldn’t either with the clowns at our top

      2. And one of them will or may guarantee better results ?
I prefer keeping Sarri til the end of the season, at least we’re not in the relegation zone. Then we can evaluate who’ll be the best option for Lazio.
Sarri shoulda just left when he found out the truth, yeah he’s made unnecessary mistakes, but Lotito is the main problem.

        1. Sarri is clearly not the solution. His “famous” Sarriball is not working at all this season, and he is incapable of making or attempting tactical changes. There is no point in continuing with him.

I would like the club to try Motta, but I have little hope that he will be appointed.

  3. No serious coach would want to come to lazio with Lotito and his band of misfits still at the helm of affairs.. but with joy i would be happy if sarri leaves… his part of the problem

  4. Both parties, Lotito & Sarri are the problem. Sarri’s insistent with playing 4-3-3 when we simply lack the quality in midfield makes me shake my head. The team lacks energy, stamina & look like going through the motions, Romagnoli & Gila want to leave & I wonder how many others.

For me, I wish for both to just go, they don’t care about the club, Lotito cares about profits & business, Sarri (whom I will assume has millions in the bank) is ticking around cause he is a stubborn old man. I hate watching our team, they suck bad.

  5. I think if it was another coach other then sarri lazio would be in a relegation fight like fiorentina. Say what you want 4-3-3 Boring, î hate seeing it too! But with no quality What can they do. Î really only grt excited when tavares comes in which idk why he doesn’t start. Zaccagni looks like a shell. Isaksen is also exciting! The problem with sarri is that he doesn’t have the players. We all saw the year sarri finished 2nd what can happen with the right players. You lose savic, Alberto, who came in? Other than maldinin idk who creates. We all know how sarri is he won’t change, so teams that hire him, either give him players or don’t hire him. And obviously he got screwed here by Lotito and his clowns
