Lazio head coach Maurizio Sarri admitted that his team lacked energy and conviction in the away defeat to Torino.
Lazio Soundly Beaten by Torino
The Biancocelesti extended their winless run in Serie A to four after conceding a goal in each half courtesy of Giovanni Simeone and Zapata, as The Granata returned to winning ways on Roberto D’Avarsa’s managerial debut.
Maurizio Sarri Discusses Flat Lazio Performance
In his post-match interviews (via Il Messaggero), Sarri tried to explain the hollow display, believing that his players weren’t focused enough, as they were perhaps distracted by Wednesday’s Coppa Italia clash against Atalanta. The 67-year-old was particularly disappointed with his team in the defensive phase.
I said on the eve of the match that if we went out there thinking about the next game, we would be dead today. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened. We were flat, the mental energy was in the opponents’ favor. Defensively we were soft and passive; all the second balls were theirs.
The lack of defensive solidity is something new for us; we mismanaged our mental energy. We have often delivered acceptable performances at the back. We have to accept this defeat but not turn it into a drama, because we play again in 72 hours. We clearly lost due to lower motivation compared to our rivals.
Lazio Players See a ‘Cloudy’ Future
Sarri then admitted that Lazio players have a bleak view of the club’s future amid all the turbulence involving the club president and the ongoing fan protest.
Everyone who takes the field sees a cloudy future, and that can drain enthusiasm during a match. But if you want excuses, I can give you a hundred. The reality is we can’t have any. Today, unfortunately, we were drained. We need to examine our conscience.

Sarri Defends Lazio Formation
The Lazio manager is convinced that the poor display has nothing to do with his tactical formation, as the issue lies elsewhere.
This team has always shown up, even in Cagliari. Today was different — a sad team without energy. When you don’t win the loose balls, it’s pointless talking about formations. That’s the reality; there’s no point making excuses.
Daniel Maldini Suffered an Injury?
Finally, Sarri offered a concerning update on Daniel Maldini, revealing that the attacker wasn’t left behind due to muscle fatigue, but he may be suffering a more serious issue.
In recent days, they (Toma Basic and Mario Gila) wouldn’t have been available; we’ll see how they are on Tuesday. Daniel Maldini doesn’t have simple fatigue, he has a knee tendinopathy. Honestly, I can’t say.

The common or main problems with Lazio all these years, from the supporters up to the management, all been busy bragging about who-is-number-one-in-Rome yet seem to forget what’s the point of the top club of Rome if we can’t even finish (at least) TOP 6 every season?
Lazio was, still is & will always be a mid-table club who occassionaly fight for CL spot.
PS:
That’s why I could not hold to sarcastically smile when The Laziali reported that Netflix would make series of us.
Seriously, of all the clubs in the world, they “picked” us ? And to this, no progress or even small rumor about it.
Me ne frego! Forza Lazio !
This season should just be over so we look forward to what next? I dnt have any hope for the team now…
I remember how Sarri used to bitch about playing every 3 days. Back when Lazio still played in Europe. Now they have one match per week and they struggle with form, injuries or motivation?? Napoli managed to win scudetto in these circumstances! This is 50% poor coaching! Incorrect system focused on pointless possession, zillion short back passes, poor movement and some hope for a random 1:0 win… Baroni managed to fight for and in Europe for 3/4 of season with basically the same team. And football was watchable. I hope for De Zerbi next season. Or anyone but Sarri.
We need 3 5 2 formation and a new owner.
New owner definitely. Hopefully another Italian with positive ambitions & money power. Sadly it’s very impossible today.
I’ve had enough of americans owning & running Italian “soccer clubs”.
Vattene !!!!!!!
Definitely not denying that Sarri’s magic is gone and likely will never return at Lazio. That being said, if you sign a trainer with a transfer embargo looming which you don’t inform him about. The relationship between Lotito and Sarri has been awful, that obviously also effects the squad. On top of not getting players that he likes and having players sold.
That the squad isn’t motivated and also doesn’t have much faith makes a lot of sense. Neither are the supporters or Sarri. Romagnoli is an important pillar and has been screwed with by Lotito and wants out. Add the injuries.
Also Roberto de Zerbie as a coach, sorry to say but that’s delusional. Lazio has financial trouble and Sarri is earning about 2.5-3million which is arguably too much for a team with a squad worth 10th in Serie A. (Transfermarkt statistics) De Zerbie is earning double that amount. To improve the financial situation Lazio needs a salary cap and a manager that’s willing to start from scrap with young players only.
Improving financial situation is now key.
I’ve said to many people that first, Lotito is a business man first, he won’t be willing to pump in any investment.
Secondly, with Lotito’s approach above, they will always sell their good players to purchase young hopeful players, it sometimes works then sometimes not.
While Lotito is there , this is & will always be our situation, I’m about to retire as fan, we can’t even dream of success anymore.
