Lazio have been dealt another untimely blow as their goalkeeper Ivan Provedel has undergone season-ending surgery.
Lazio Have Been Ravaged by Injuries This season
The Biancocelesti’s squad has been picked apart by the injury bug since the start of the season. In recent weeks, Maurizio Sarri has received a few boosts, with the likes of Mario Gila, Manuel Lazzari, and Toma Basic returning from injury, leaving only Nicolo Rovella and Samuel Gigot on the treatment table.
But unfortunately for the head coach, he received devastating news on Saturday, as it was announced that his stalwart Provedel will be ruled out of action for several months.
Lazio Announce That Ivan Provedel Will Undergo Surgery
Lazio released an official statement on the club’s website, revealing that the 31-year-old had to undergo clinical tests after complaining of pain in the shoulder, and it turned out that his condition was much more serious than initially envisioned, so he will have to go under the knife in the next few days.
This afternoon, following a consultation between the medical staff composed of Prof. Ivo Pulcini, Prof. Fabio Rodia, and team doctor Italo Leo, SS Lazio released the following statement.
Yesterday, goalkeeper Ivan Provedel, due to persistent pain symptoms in his shoulder stemming from a previous match injury, underwent further diagnostic tests.
The MRI scan, carried out at the Villa Mafalda Clinic, revealed a lesion of the glenohumeral ligament associated with involvement of the glenoid labrum. In the coming days, the player will undergo arthroscopic shoulder stabilization surgery.
Edoardo Motta Will Fill in for Provedel
Since the start of the season, Provedel hasn’t missed a minute of action in Serie A. Sarri only dropped him once, when he gave the nod to Christos Mandas against AC Milan in the Coppa Italian Round of 16. The Greek goalkeeper has since joined Bournemouth, with the unsung Edoardo Motta arriving as a replacement.
The 21-year-old will now have a major burden on his shoulders, as La Lazio Siamo Noi expects Provedel to remain on the sidelines for three or four months, meaning that his campaign is practically over. The former Reggiana custodian will try to prove that Angelo Fabiani and Claudio Lotito were right to choose him; otherwise, the decision to send the reliable Mandas away will return to haunt the club officials.

The next perfecf safe HANDS was given away for cheapskate… guess we stack with the other guy
This season is already over so it doesn’t matter who is standing between the posts. This is a good chance for Motta to show if he has a future at Lazio.
The serie is over but the coppa is not, we needed Provedel there and Mandas would’ve been on par with him. Now we have a surprise kid who likely won’t cope with the pressure. Hope he proves me wrong
Thanks Lotito &Fabiani, clowns
With this, we are officialy entering into relegation battle. Teams below us are collecting points and are closing that 10-point gap we had. We need 2 quick wins to reach 40-point barrier and feel kind of “safe”. Nothing is working right now. Goalkeeper is gone. Strikers are inconsistent. Coach is on his way out (sooner or later). Midfield is the weakest in decades. Mood is awful, fans on strike and there are no leaders. Romagnoli wants out. Zaccagni is a shadow of himself. Cataldi is laziale but otherwise an average player. Sasuolo match will be crucial. If we lose it, we won’t finish better than 15th.
Sadly, I think you were spot on with everything bro…
