Olympique Marseille are preparing to part ways with Mason Greenwood this summer, as Lazio captain Mattia Zaccagni emerges as a top candidate to fill the gap.

Mason Greenwood Set to Leave Marseille

The Englishman has been playing his football at the Velodrome since 2024. This season, he contributed with 26 goals and 11 assists. However, the French club is expected to cash in on the Manchester United academy product this summer, especially following Roberto De Zerbi’s departure, as reported by several sources in the French media.

Marseille Turn to Mattia Zaccagni

Over the past few months, Zaccagni has been linked with Marseille, and Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) believes that Greenwood’s expected sale should pave the way for the 31-year-old’s transfer to the Ligue 1 giants.

Zaccagni Had a Torrid Campaign at Lazio

The Lazio captain has endured his toughest campaign since joining the Italian capital side in 2021. He sustained several muscle injuries and only managed to score four goals and provide two assists in 30 appearances.

Therefore, the newspaper believes the winger could lead the summer exodus at Formello, which could also include key Lazio players, like Mario Gila, Alessio Romagnoli, and Ivan Provedel, who are all running on contracts expiring in June 2027.

Several Lazio Players Will Depart in the Summer

On the other hand, Pedro has already announced his retirement at the end of the season, while Elseid Hysaj’s departure has also been confirmed. The Albanian will leave as a free agent, with Toma Basic expected to follow suit, barring any late twists.

  1. Zacca will be a benchwarmer at Marseille, then will be loaned out to Inter during 2026 winter mercato.

  2. What are u doing? Lotito that would put the nail in your coffin. The tifosi wouldn’t stand for it. 🤌🏼

    1. I don’t think this would cause much uproar. I like Zaccagni, but he’ll be 32 years old next season, and Lazio’s training staff can’t maintain his fitness.

He’s an explosive player who battled constant injuries as his body can’t maintain that explosiveness. I think his best years are behind him…

Maybe Marseille’s medical staff is better and can manage him better, but in the meantime, it’s not a bad idea to clear your highest salary and cash in while you can.

I don’t have high hopes that Lotito will replace him with someone of quality and my hopes are even lower that Lotito will find an Italian to replace him with.

      1. Spot on the moment to sell him is now. While I’m aware that I’m repeating myself again. He also earns too much, after Romagnoli he’s the biggest earner, likely between 5.5-6 million gross. Which is way too much for a team in Lazio’s position.

Injuries likely indeed only get worse, while his value will decrease more.

As much as I like him and I prefer to keep Italians on board. Cashing in on him is by far the best choice.

  3. Why would you sell a player that scored 26 goals this season for a player that didn’t even score 10 ?

Money laundering if you ask me

    1. Greenwood for about 26 million it seems and might sell for 70 million.

But money laundering, interested into the argumentation for such a claim.

  4. Yep, that’s the right time to get some money for a 32 years old player.

  5. I am not against him leaving but bring in Vincenzo Italiano so we can start playing football
