Lazio have reportedly secured the signature of young Dinamo Zagreb defender Sergi Dominguez, who will become the club’s second summer signing after Alfonso Pedraza.

Lazio Have an Agreement to Sign Sergi Dominguez

The Biancocelesti have been pursuing the 21-year-old for several months, and according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, they have already reached an agreement with the Croatian champions worth €3 million. The pink newspaper believes the Spaniard is effectively a Lazio player in all but name, as the official announcement might not arrive before July.

Dominguez’s Background & Stats

Dominguez is a product of Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy. He went through every age group before eventually reaching the senior squad and making a few appearances, but he left the club last summer to pursue a more prominent role.

The young defender immediately established himself as a pillar at the back for Dinamo Zagreb, helping the club win the domestic double. He contributed with two goals and four assists across all competitions.

Lazio Want Dominguez to Learn from Mario Gila

Dominguez is expected to be the long-term successor of fellow Barcelona native, Mario Gila, but not necessarily his immediate replacement. As the source explains, Lazio are seriously considering retaining the 25-year-old despite the growing interest in his services.

Gila has made it abundantly clear that he’s not planning to extend his contract with the Biancocelesti beyond 2027. Nevertheless, Claudio Lotito and Angelo Fabiani would prefer to keep him for another year rather than sell him at a discount and split a modest transfer fee with Real Madrid (who retained a 50% sell-on fee).

Therefore, Dominguez could act as Gila’s backup next season while adjusting to his new surroundings at Formello, before taking the torch from his countryman when he leaves in June 2027. Lazio had a somewhat similar arrangement involving Alessio Romagnoli and Oliver Provstgaard, even though incoming head coach Gennaro Gattuso is pleading with the Italian defender to stay.

  1. 3million isn’t much for a player with a contract until 2029. Who played well seemingly for them and most of the matches. It’s far better I believe to pay more rather than have a selling on-fee.

Seems too good to be true.

    1. It’s a great signing. I’m not familiar with him, but he’s cheap, low salary, and had an average match rating of 6.7 for both the EL and Croatian league. He has some very strong potential.
