Lazio Add New Italy Debutant to Defensive Shortlist

Lazio are reportedly considering a move for Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Fabio Chiarodia.

Fabio Chiarodia’s Background

The 21-year-old was born and raised in Oldenburg, Germany. He began his career at the hometown club before moving to Werder Bremen’s academy, and climbed his way up the ranks to become a member of the first team. In 2023, the defender completed his transfer to Gladbach on a deal worth €1 million.

Senior Italia Debut

On the international stage, Chiarodia had represented Germany at the U15 before declaring for his country of origin, Italy. After playing with the Azzurrini at various youth levels, the defender earned his senior debut earlier this week in the 1-0 victory over Luxembourg. Interim manager Silvio Baldini opted to give youngsters the chance to prove their worth, and Chiarodia was in the starting lineup.

Lazio Add Chiarodia to Post-Alessio Romagnoli Shortlist

According to Il Messaggero, Lazio have identified the Monchengladbach youngster as one of their options to replace Alessio Romagnoli, who is expected to finalize his transfer to Al-Sadd in the coming days. The alternative option remains Brighton’s wantaway Diego Coppola.

Why Lazio Are Encouraged to Pursue Chiarodia

Chiarodia’s contract with the Bundesliga side will expire in June 2027, so he could be available at a discount this summer. Transfermarkt estimates his current value at €3 million. It should also be noted that, thanks to a newly implemented regulation, the costs of signing Italian players under the age of 23 are exempt from the financial statements that Serie A clubs present to the supervisory committee.

  1. Signing Coppola on loan with option to buy and Chiarodia 4-5m€ would be great.

    1. 1st of july about 22million in wages goes down. (excluding bonuses)

      Getting a bunch of talented players in, would be great.

      Getting rid of Zaccagni, Gigot, Provedel, Lazzari, Pellegrini. 18.8 and Tavares would up it to 22.8m. (Excluding bonuses)

      45million in salary would be gone, with 16 players left of which 3 goalkeepers.

      Honestly the club would be healthy again if Lazio replaced those players, with maximum Taylor wages.
