Lazio stalwart Alessio Romagnoli has already signed for Al-Sadd, according to multiple sources in the Italian media.

Alessio Romagnoli Has Been at Odds with Lazio President Claudio Lotito

The 31-year-old is a childhood Lazio supporter who realized his dream by joining his beloved club on a free transfer in 2022 after seeing out his contract with AC Milan. At the time, the defender agreed to halve his yearly salary to €3 million, as Claudio Lotito had promised him a pay raise should he help the club secure Champions League football. However, the patron never kept his word.

Therefore, the relationship between Romagnoli and the Lazio hierarchy has vastly deteriorated over the years. With only one year left on his contract, his departure became inevitable.

Al-Sadd Have Been Pursuing Romagnoli Since January

The Roman was on the cusp of joining Al-Sadd in January, but the deal collapsed in the final hours, with Lotito reportedly asking the player to waive three months’ salary so he could give him the green light to leave.

The Italian defender refused as a matter of principle, even if it meant missing out on a lucrative contract. Nevertheless, the Qatari champions decided to launch a new onslaught, and have seemingly reached the finish line this time.

Romagnoli Has Effectively Joined Al-Sadd

According to multiple sources in Italy, including Il Messaggero, Gianluca Di Marzio, and La Lazio Siamo Noi, Romagnoli has already signed his contract with Al-Sadd, with Lazio receiving a modest transfer fee of €3 million. The player will undergo his medical in the coming days, and an official confirmation is expected to follow.

The Italian defender will earn €6 million per year. Interestingly, he was initially requested by his compatriot Roberto Mancini. But despite the manager’s departure, Al-Sadd were keen to proceed with the deal.

    1. Another botched transfer by Lotito. He broke the heart of a home grown talent, had an 8m offer on the table in January which he farted around with over wages, and now settles for 3m… wonderful.
