Lazio are making progress in their quest to sign Dinamo Zagreb defender Sergi Dominguez, but his arrival won’t happen imminently.
Lazio Determined to Sign Sergi Dominguez
The Biancocelesti identified the 21-year-old Barcelona academy product as their first choice to replace Mario Gila, who was sold to AC Milan, and Alessio Romagnoli, who is expected to join Al-Sadd. The club has already signed Danilho Doekhi on a free transfer, but the Dutchman’s arrival isn’t sufficient on its own.
The club has been keeping track of alternative profiles, especially Fiorentina youngster Pietro Comuzzo, but recruiting Dominguez remains the priority. Hence why Lazio coach Gennaro Gattuso got involved in the negotiations, contacting his former AC Milan teammate, Zvonimir Boban, who nowadays serves as Dinamo Zagreb’s president.
Lazio & Dinamo Zagreb Still Working on Figures & Formula
According to Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the two clubs have managed to reduce the gap, with the Croatian champions now requesting €12 million instead of their original €15 million asking price. However, finding the right formula remains the biggest issue, as Lazio are hoping to initially spend just €3.5 million, while guaranteeing the remaining €8.5 million through add-ons.
Moreover, Claudio Lotito and Angelo Fabiani prefer to sign Dominguez on an initial loan deal with an option to buy that would transform into an obligation if Lazio were to qualify for Europe at the end of the season.
Dominguez Promises at Dinamo Zagreb Until Next Week
While it remains to be seen if the two clubs will be able to sort out the situation, the young Spaniard vowed to stay in Zagreb to help his employers in their double encounter against Thun in the second round of the Champions League qualifiers. The two clubs will meet this Tuesday for the first leg, before clashing heads next Tuesday in the decisive fixture.
