Lazio have confirmed that Boulaye Dia has left the club and signed for Stade Rennais, marking his return to France after five years.

The Senegalese international has been with the Biancocelesti since making the move from Salernitana in the summer of 2024. In his first few months at the Stadio Olimpico, he cemented himself as a key player in Marco Baroni’s 4-2-3-1 system, striking a successful partnership with Taty Castellanos.
Dia enjoyed playing behind the Argentine as a second striker, but later struggled when tasked with leading the line himself in a 4-3-3 formation, whether under Maurizio Sarri last season or with Gennaro Gattuso this term. Therefore, the 29-year-old jumped at the opportunity to return to Ligue 1 for the first time since Stade Reims sold him to Villarreal in the summer of 2021.

On Tuesday evening, the official Lazio website announced that Dia has joined Rennes on a season-long loan with an option to buy that could turn into an obligation.

As usual, the official announcement didn’t include any details, but the Biancocelesti are expected to pocket around €10 million if the striker completes a permanent transfer next summer. Previous reports suggested that the obligation is predicated on easily achievable sporting objectives, so Dia’s return to Formello is considered unlikely.

The French-Senegalese forward has thus left the Biancocelesti after making 81 appearances across all competitions, scoring 14 goals and providing his teammates with six assists.
