As reported earlier, Lazio already has agreed a new sponsorship deal with Marathonbet, an English betting company. But this collided with the new Dignity Decree, signed by the Minister of Economic Development Luigi Di Maio, which prohibits advertising and promotion of gambling and betting. Di Maio has also threatened that it could lead to sanctions if any club would try to go against or around this.
From 1 January 2019, as reported by the Corriere dello Sport, this prohibition will also extend to other forms of communication of promotional content. Lazio president Claudio Lotito therefore, given the previous agreement with 7 million euros per season until 2021, could then maintain the agreement until 31 December 2018 by changing the economic part of the agreement with Marathonbet, and in that way being able to avoid possible penalties or sanctions.
It remains to be seen where it all ends up and if Seleco remains on the Lazio shirts, even for next season.
