Lazio Target Mertens on Napoli Renewal: ‘I Haven’t Heard From Anyone’

Dries Mertens implied that he’ll be leaving Napoli at the end of this month, confirming that he’s not held contract renewal talks yet.

The 35-year-old Belgian winger’s current deal expires with the Partenopei at the end of this year and media reports suggested that negotiations were in full swing regarding a new contract. Lazio have been keeping a close eye on the situation, interested in picking up the player on a free transfer this summer.

Speaking to gathered reporters at a press conference (via TuttoMercatoWeb), Mertens discussed his future plans and the lack of progress with Napoli.

I want to make the right choice. I want to find a good club. I’m calm, but I think a lot about my choice. I thought I’d stay at Napoli, it’s strange that they waited so long.

Regarding the contract extension at Napoli, I haven’t heard from anyone yet. I hope in the coming days or weeks to let you know.

The 35-year-old Mertens is now on the cusp of ending a nine-year association with Napoli. He joined the club in the summer of 2013 from PSV in a deal worth around €9.48 million.

Across the last nine years, the Belgian forward has made 397 appearances for Napoli, scoring 148 goals and providing 90 assists.
